What am I on about here?
Thinking Hebrew (TH) is a way of thinking that is different from the one that that is commonly accepted as the norm in many western cultures. Greek thinking (GT) is pedantic and prone to wearing us all out with its long windedness ; GT takes the one equation too seriously and therefore gets stuck on describing the very words that it relies on.
Some westerners still "Think Hebrew", but they appear to be in a minority .
If you are for the majority view , you might well ask "Why go back to using words that are well in our past when most thinking people believe in progress."
This is the challenge then, like that of the 3rd century and many reformation periods in the last 20 - are we really progressing ?; Are we limiting ourselves by the way we think?
One reason why you might like to think more about avoiding greek thinking (GT) is because modern growth economies rely on it - solving the next problem ( rather than the overall problem) suits both industry, government and advertisers whether they acknowledge it or not. Just picture for a moment what is happening inside a bureaucacy near you . Is it solving the next problem , or the overall problem. Is it talking about solving the big problem , but really just growing its shallow list of things "to solve." all the kings horses couldn't put h umpty together again ?
The waste we face in the West in the year 2010 is that which undermines our sense of completion and completeness. Paradoxically the problems haven't got harder than our forebears so why do we need so much bungling bureaucracy to try to solve them? The waste even drives the appetite for more technological fix and escape for the sake of escape.
How can we think laterally without hacking at the very way we think ?
In Australia, like the West in general, we find it easy to study a problem by subdividing it up.
This works fine with many areas such as mechanics and technology. When the area of study is much bigger than the sum of the parts , or if we are not sure of the very nature of the parts , GT is often highly wasteful , distracting and unproductive .
Yesterday on the science show Craig Venter in summarizing human genome research said 97% of research money was often wasted . This is what I have been saying about much so called science research in Australia. Thinking greek is often less than satisfactory when you look at investments in psychology and sociology, the high level of failure in ideas of creating more efficient systems ; areas where purpose , value or choice too , add to the permutations and combinations.
My concern is that our young people should be offered more than the freedom to experiment ; because life is short and some ways to enjoy it , and avoid the cul desacs, are well known ( even if they can't be demonstrated from a purely empirical reasonableness or by saying "open all the doors available" ) .Revisiting marriage as though there is something better, is an example of a recurring experimental area that has in the long term proved fruitless. Tell me I am wrong.
